Brad Pitt proves he's still got it in this adrenaline-packed, if occasionally lacking, male melodrama.

Warning: Full spoilers for the film follow.

I’m going to be honest. I’m an absolute sucker for a male melodrama. Films like John Wick and Creed are my kryptonite, and there’s something about the mixture of kinetic energy, pyrotechnics, adrenaline, and feelings that just hits the sweet spot for me as a viewer. As soon as I saw the first trailers for F1 I knew that this was going to be a must-see for me, and I am happy to report that that is indeed the case. If you are looking for a good old-fashioned summer crowd-pleaser that’s all about the fraught dynamics between men of two different generations (and races), then F1 is for you. Throw in some adrenaline-packed races and some genuine badassery from Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, and Damson Idris, and the result is a spectacle that doesn’t disappoint.

Brad Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, a racer whose best days seem to be behind him, and an accident during his time as a Formula One racer have kept him from ever really pursuing his dream. This all changes when his old racing buddy, Rubén Cervantes (Javier Bardem), comes along and offers  Though at first it doesn’t seem like he’s going to sign up for it, he does, and this causes him to butt heads with Damson Idris’ Joshua Pearce, one of the best racers on Cervantes’ team. As so often happens in these movies, they have to learn to work together if they’re going to get their team to the finish line.
