Warning: Full spoilers for the book follow.

I have now finished Guy Gavriel Kay’s newest novel, Written on the Dark, and let me say at the outset that it met and exceeded all of my expectations. It’s the sort of beautifully melancholic tale that I’ve come to expect from him, and he delivers in almost every regard. Now that I’ve finished it, it’s time to wrap up my part-by-part explication of this wonderful book.

The third part of the book broadens the scope, as we rejoin our various characters. Of particular note is Duke de Barratin, who has designs on the throne of Ferrieres. Once again, Thierry finds himself inexorably drawn into the great events of Ferrieres, particularly since it’s very obvious that the Duke won’t rest until he has deposed his cousin and taken the throne for himself. Ultimately, however, his designs are cut short in a violent encounter with his cousin the monarch and several others who have gathered there, leaving Ferrieres at peace once again.
